Sun moves into sidereal Cancer on Thursday, July 16th – the natural house of home, family, and the deep waters of feeling. This is the sign of the mother, the hearth, and the healing that comes from belonging somewhere.
But this year carries something I have not seen in some time. The Sun is stepping into a house already occupied by an exalted Jupiter.
Jupiter has been in Cancer since early June, sitting in his single most powerful sign in the zodiac. When the Sun follows on July 16th, the two great luminaries of the sky share the same home: the Atman and the Guru, side by side, in the Guru’s own sign. That is a rare kind of grace.
This is also the beginning of Dakshinayana, the six-month period when the Sun moves to the south of the equator, the days grow shorter, and the emphasis of life shifts from outward achievement to inward cultivation. The Vedic tradition considers this period more auspicious for spiritual practice than for new ventures. It is the season of the Guru. That this Sun in Cancer coincides with exalted Jupiter is a signal the sky does not send often.
Sun in Punarvasu (Cancer 0-3.20): July 16-20
Punarvasu means “return of the light” or “becoming good again.” The Sun moves through these opening degrees of Cancer in the first four days of the transit. With Jupiter close by, there is a sense of returning to something essential – a relationship, a practice, a sense of home in yourself. It is a good time to renew what matters.
Sun in Pushya (Cancer 3.20-16.40): July 20 – August 3
Pushya is ruled by Brihaspati, the priest of the gods, the same energy as Jupiter himself. For the Sun to pass through Pushya while Jupiter is already residing there is to amplify the Guru principle in full force. Brihaspati bestows good luck, good fortune, and a love of spiritual teaching. He brings blessings to children and to those who give generously.
The Sun, however, does not do its best work in Pushya. This is a Saturn-ruled nakshatra, and when the Sun moves through it there is a risk of getting wrapped up in material concerns and losing sight of the larger spiritual mission. Use this as a reminder to return to your practices, your meditation, your deeper purpose.
July 23rd brings welcome news: Mercury stations direct, ending the retrograde that began June 29th. The fog and miscommunications begin to lift. Give it a few days for things to fully settle, but the direction has changed.
July 29th is the peak of the month. The Sun and Jupiter reach exact conjunction in Pushya nakshatra, creating what the tradition calls Guru Pushya yoga – considered one of the most auspicious days of the year, a day when the blessings of the teacher and the light of consciousness arrive together. Spend time in prayer, with your guru, or in study. Whatever you begin or dedicate on that day carries extra weight.
Sun in Ashlesha (Cancer 16.40-29.59): August 3-16
Ashlesha is ruled by the Nagas, the serpent beings of Vedic mythology, and is connected to Lord Vishnu. This nakshatra carries deep occult wisdom, and in transit it can bring profound spiritual experience to those who are open to it. The Mercury rulership of this constellation brings intellectual depth – questions about the nature of karma, the workings of time, the purpose of what we carry. Stay close to your teacher during this passage.
The Cancer Gandanta (August 14-16)
The final days of the transit move through the Cancer gandanta, the zone from Cancer 27 to 30 degrees, at the junction between water and fire. This is where the old emotional patterns that have been building through the month can surface in a knotted rush. Deep unconscious material and long-held regrets may feel overwhelming. But remember: you have the power of free will in the present moment to move through into new light. You do not have to live in the shadows and mistakes of the past. Let them go. They seem tangled and difficult to deal with, but you are strong enough to get through them.
By Rising Sign
For Leo Rising: Cancer is your 12th house, so this transit turns attention inward – expenditure, subconscious processing, retreat. Travel to foreign places can be unexpectedly fruitful. This is an excellent month for inner work and meditation.
For Pisces Rising: Cancer is your 5th house, where spiritual practices and initiations bear fruit. This is one of the better Sun transits of the year for you.
For Scorpio Rising: Cancer is your 9th house of the Guru and higher teaching. Guru Pushya yoga on July 29th carries particular significance.
