EYE ON THE SKY: Partial Lunar Eclipse August 27-28 in Shatabhisha

EYE ON THE SKY: PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE, AUGUST 27-28

There is a partial lunar eclipse on Thursday night, August 27, running into the small hours of Friday morning on the East Coast. The Moon does not disappear entirely this time. At the deepest moment about ninety three percent of the disc is inside the Earth’s umbral shadow, so a thin bright rim survives along one edge while the rest goes the colour of old copper. It is the second of the pair that opened with the solar eclipse on August 12.

The times, in your zone

The shadow arrives in two stages. The penumbra is the faint outer shadow and most people cannot see it at all. The umbra is the dark one, and that is the eclipse you actually notice.

The whole event runs a little over five and a half hours from first touch to last, and the dark phase alone runs about three hours and twenty minutes. This is why you will see the date written two ways. In the Central, Mountain and Pacific zones the eclipse peaks on the 27th. On the East Coast the peak has already slipped past midnight into the 28th. Both are correct. It is one eclipse.

Where it falls

The eclipsed Moon sits at ten degrees of sidereal Aquarius, in the nakshatra of Shatabhisha, with the Sun directly opposite at ten degrees of Leo in Magha. The axis of this eclipse therefore runs between two nakshatras that could not be less alike: Magha, the seat of the ancestors and of inherited authority, ruled by Ketu, and Shatabhisha, the far edge of the sky, ruled by Rahu.

Shatabhisha is usually translated as the hundred healers, or the hundred stars, and its deity is Varuna, who presides over the cosmic waters and over oaths. It is the nakshatra of the physician, the researcher and the recluse. It rules the kind of healing that happens in private, often after everything obvious has already been tried, and it has a long association with conditions that resist easy diagnosis. It is also secretive. People with strong Shatabhisha keep their own counsel, sometimes to their cost.

An eclipse in Shatabhisha, opposed by the Sun in the nakshatra of the ancestors, is pointing at something quite specific: the health pattern that came down the family line and has never quite been named. Not a punishment. A disclosure.

What the tradition asks of you

Here I want to be plain, because the popular advice has drifted. The Vedic practice is to remain indoors while the shadow is on the Moon, and not to view the eclipse. The hours are not given to spectating. They are given to japa, to mantra, to meditation and to stillness. Draw the curtains and let it pass over the house.

Meditation is the most powerful remedy available during an eclipse, and it costs nothing. If you have a mantra, this is the night to sit with it. If you do not, sit anyway. A walk or some slow stretching once the shadow has cleared settles the nervous system. Bathe when it is over. I would not make the fasting rules the centre of this. For most people eating lightly and simply is sufficient, and an elderly or unwell person should not be fasting through the middle of the night at all.

Practically: do not sign, do not launch, do not confront, and do not make the irreversible decision in the three days either side. Eclipse judgment is poor judgment. Whatever looks urgent on Thursday night will still be there, and clearer, the following week.

The week it sits inside

This eclipse does not arrive alone, which is why the week feels loud.

On the same day, August 27, Mercury reaches its exact conjunction with the Sun. Mercury has been travelling combust since August 13 and stays that way until September 13, so the mind has been running hot and slightly unreliable for a fortnight already. The exact conjunction is the deepest point of it. A poor moment for contracts, a fine one for reflection.

Then on August 28, both Mercury and the Sun square Uranus. That is the signature for the abrupt reversal, the message you did not expect, the plan that has to be rewritten in an afternoon. Coming immediately after the eclipse, it is the aftershock.

And then on August 31 the week resolves. Jupiter trines Saturn, exact, with Jupiter at nineteen degrees of Cancer in Ashlesha and Saturn at nineteen degrees of Pisces in Revati. The two great teachers in agreement is not a common configuration and it is a genuinely constructive one. It favours the long decision, the structure you build slowly, the commitment meant to outlast the mood you are in. If you have been waiting for a steady window, that is it, and it opens the moment the eclipse dust settles.

Who feels this one most

If you have the Sun, the Moon, the ascendant or a chart ruler within about three degrees of ten Aquarius or ten Leo, this eclipse is speaking to you directly rather than in general. Fixed sign placements more broadly will feel it. So will anyone currently running a Rahu or Ketu period, since the nodes are the authors of the whole event.

Eclipses in Aquarius tend to work on the group rather than the individual: the organisation you belong to, the friendship circle, the cause, the network. Something in that layer of life gets rearranged, and Shatabhisha suggests it will happen quietly and be understood only afterward.

The instruction for Thursday night is the simplest one in the tradition. Stay in. Sit down. Let it pass.
