The big story of late July is Jupiter in Cancer moving into exact opposition with Pluto in Capricorn on July 20-21. This is not an everyday transit. Jupiter and Pluto meet or face off only every six to seven years, and when they do, history has a way of turning on money and power.

Before we look forward, I want to be clear about what follows: these are events that already happened. I went back through a century of these alignments and checked every date against the ephemeris, keeping only the events that fell tightly against the exact aspect and discarding the ones that did not. The record can teach us how this energy behaves. It does not tell us what day the news will break.

The conjunctions: where the cycle begins

In August 1918, Jupiter and Pluto were conjunct in the very month the deadly second wave of the Spanish flu ignited, and the armistice that ended World War One followed weeks later. When they met again in May 1931, Austria’s Creditanstalt bank collapsed on May 11, within about two and a half degrees of exact. That single bank failure is what turned a bad recession into the global Great Depression. At the December 1994 conjunction, Orange County filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history on December 6, less than one degree from exact, and Mexico devalued the peso two weeks later, setting off the Tequila crisis. The December 2007 conjunction landed on the very month the National Bureau of Economic Research later marked as the official start of the Great Recession. And the triple conjunction of 2020 needs no introduction: the pandemic declaration and the largest rescue package in American history arrived on the way in, with the CARES Act signed within one degree of exact, and the vaccine announcement that broke the fear came three days before the final exact pass in November.

The oppositions: power confronting power

The opposition, the phase we are entering now, is the full-moon moment of the cycle, when whatever was seeded at the conjunction comes into open confrontation. The income tax amendment was ratified weeks after the January 1913 opposition. McCarthy gave his famous speech about enemies within on February 9, 1950, one degree from exact. Saigon fell in April 1975 within three degrees. The autumn 2000 leg of the dot-com collapse unfolded within a degree of the October 2000 opposition. Russia annexed Crimea in March 2014 within three degrees of that year’s opposition series.

Two honest notes. First, not everything big belongs to this cycle. I checked the dates people like to cite, and events such as 9/11 were nowhere near a Jupiter-Pluto aspect, so we will not pretend they were. Second, the cycle does not only mark crisis. The 2020 conjunction bracketed both the panic and the rescue, both the crash and one of the fastest recoveries ever. Jupiter magnifies whatever Pluto is transforming, in both directions.

Translating the pattern to July 2026

So where might this energy be working today? Look at what is already straining. The Korean stock market has just given us the most volatile year in its history, with more trading halts than 2008: the KOSPI fell almost ten percent in a single session on June 23, its largest point decline on record, with Samsung and SK Hynix, which make up nearly half the index, leading the fall, retail margin debt at record highs, and the won under heavy pressure. When leverage unwinds in one corner of the world, the 1931 record reminds us how quickly a local failure can bleed into everything else: Creditanstalt was one Austrian bank, and it globalized a depression. The same watchfulness applies to the private credit markets, where enormous sums have been lent outside the banking system with very little daylight on them. If the Jupiter-Pluto opposition marks anything this cycle, a reckoning in overextended credit, with Korea as a possible first domino, is the shape history suggests.

And there is a harder speculation that has to be said plainly, because the record says it twice: this cycle has coincided with pandemics. The 1918 conjunction sat on the ignition of the Spanish flu’s deadliest wave, and the 2020 triple conjunction bracketed COVID from declaration to vaccine. That does not mean a new pandemic is fated for this window, and I want to be careful here: this is speculation from pattern, not prediction. But if a novel health scare surfaces around this opposition, the cycle says take it seriously early rather than late.

None of this is a reason for fear. Oppositions demand awareness, not panic, and remember that the same aspect that marked the 1931 collapse also marked the 2020 rescue. The practical counsel is old-fashioned: do not be the most leveraged person in the room in late July, keep some reserves, and let any structure in your life that has quietly become about control rather than support go through its renovation willingly. On the personal level, negotiations with employers, institutions, and family structures come to a head around July 20-21, and the temptation is to overreach. The higher road has always been to let the outdated structure go and let something more honest replace it.
