Eye On The Sky: Moving Into Summer

The summer solstice arrives Saturday June 20 and runs through Sunday June 21. The longest day of the year is upon us in the Northern Hemisphere and our friends in the Southern Hemisphere enter their longest night. Cultures around the world have celebrated the solstice with music, meditation, and rest. The solstice is a re-balancing point of the planet’s electromagnetic energies. There is a kick of extra energy around this window and people often feel pushed to run an extra mile, finish two or three extra errands, take on one more project. Do not overdo it. This is the classic solstice mistake. People push themselves at the energetic peak and then crash with sickness or fatigue into the first week of the new season.

The days around the solstice are wild. Use them for rest and reflection rather than acceleration.

What Makes This Year Different

This solstice carries a major Mars transition layered on top. Mars has just entered the constellation of Krittika in early sidereal Taurus and will cross fully into sidereal Taurus on June 20, the same day as the solstice itself. Mars in Taurus is a significant shift. Mars is debilitated in Taurus and the fire planet has to operate in the slow, earthy, possessive territory of Venus. The pressure point is real. Old Taurus issues around money, food, security, and stubbornness come to the surface and ask to be looked at honestly.

Mars stays in sidereal Taurus from June 20 through early August. Watch for slow-build tension that finally pops, especially in family and partnership matters where money or shared resources are involved. Mars in Krittika and Taurus is also one of the historically active windows for the long bond market. How To Work With The Solstice

The same advice I have given for many years holds again this year. Rest extra on Friday and Saturday. Stay away from stimulants. The sugar in extra cookies and the second coffee both look harmless and both are hard on the system when the planetary current is already amplified. Meditate longer than usual. Use yoga, especially the frog pose, to support Mars and the adrenals. Get to bed earlier than you think you need to. Take a walk at sunrise or sunset if you can.

For those of you doing chart work, this is a beautiful time to look quietly at your own Mars placement and at where the Sun sits in your sidereal chart. The solstice is the Sun at full power and any house lord touched by the Sun gets brightened. Pay attention to themes that come up around the houses ruled by your Sun in the days after the solstice, since those themes are being lit up for closer examination over the next six months.

Mid-Year Reset

There is a quiet permission inside the solstice to take a real mid-year reset. Half the year is behind you. The houses and dashas you were working with at the spring equinox have done some of their work. What did you actually move on? What promised more than it delivered? What is asking to be released so the second half can be lighter?

Sit with those questions for an hour over the weekend with a journal. The astrological year is built for exactly that practice at this window. Coming out of the solstice with one clear honest answer is worth more than coming out of it with ten new projects.
