EYE ON THE SKY — PLUTO STATIONARY RETROGRADE: MAY 6, 2026
If I had not had so many experiences with Pluto, I could easily disavow this tiny planet — but its power is anything but tiny. On May 6th, Pluto stations to go retrograde in Capricorn in the sidereal zodiac at about 11 degrees Capricorn. If you have planets near that degree in Capricorn, Cancer, Aries, or Libra in your natal chart, you will feel its impact most. The station’s influence extends five days before and after — so approximately May 1st through May 11th is the most concentrated window.
As Pluto stations, I often experience intense energy in the solar plexus and a surge of concentrated power — likely because I am Scorpio rising, the sign most deeply connected to Pluto.
Why Pluto Matters in Vedic Astrology
While not a traditional Vedic planet, the great Vedic astrologer Nirendra Desai pointed to an ancient Vasistha Nadi palm leaf predicting that three important grahas would be discovered by jyotishis of the Kali Yuga. Dennis Harness notes that according to Mr. Desai, the palm leaf named these grahas Prajapati, Varuna, and Yama — and Pluto is most closely connected to Lord Yama:
“In Hindu mythology, Yama is the god of death and agent of Lord Shiva. Yama means ‘the binder, restrainer’ who keeps mankind in check. He is a deity that demands sacrifice and discipline. He decides which actions of humans bear or do not bear fruit. Yama then judges the dead whom his messengers drag before his throne. His aide, Chitragupta catalogues the karma of all human beings and replays the major life events helping the soul realize its life’s work.” (See: http://dennisharness.com/plutoneovedic.html)
Western astrologers connect Pluto with transformation through the destruction of the old — the Shiva principle. Pluto’s impact is rarely subtle. It brings metaphorical deaths: the end of patterns, structures, relationships, and identities that have outlived their purpose. The houses it transits remind us we can no longer patch what is broken — we have to do the remodel. The old is destroyed so rebirth can happen.
I like to think of Pluto’s more difficult passages as an invitation to surrender to Divine Will — the deep trust that something better is being built even as something familiar falls away. The Pluto transits require total faith that God has a plan, even when its lessons seem painful.
What Does Pluto Retrograde Mean?
Pluto’s powers of transformation and regeneration deepen during retrograde, which runs through approximately October 2026. For some, this period gives new strength to overcome challenges that seemed insurmountable. Like all retrogrades, it turns the energy inward — toward inner psyche work, releasing rigid patterns, and confronting our relationship with security and control.
This is a time to look honestly at where we are giving our power away to others. Or conversely, where we are controlling others or situations in ways that no longer serve. Fated events and repeating themes will surface to show which habits, compulsions, addictions, or blind spots must be eliminated rather than managed.
It can be a productive time to:
- Begin therapy or deepen existing inner work
- Do a physical detox or internal cleansing
- Go deeper in meditation retreats
- Confront what has been avoided around power and control in relationships
Pluto retrograde forces an internal investigation — root out the problem, eliminate it, and allow something new to grow in its place.
Your Chart and Capricorn
Whatever house in your natal chart is connected to Capricorn is experiencing a long arc of change that began around 2020 and continues into 2040. This retrograde is a chance to consolidate the inner changes before the next outward push resumes.
For example, if you are Sagittarius rising, Capricorn governs your 2nd house — changes in family, finance, and speech are deepening. We cannot list all combinations in this short article, but look to Capricorn in your chart for the arena of this retrograde’s work.
Special thanks to my teachers Komilla Sutton, Dennis Harness, and all my Jyotish and spiritual gurus for their wisdom and continual inspiration. Special thanks to Robert Hand for his insights on the outer planets.
