EYE ON THE SKY: SUN IN CAPRICORN

EYE ON THE SKY: SUN IN CAPRICORN

EYE ON THE SKY: SUN IN CAPRICORN

January 14, 2026 – February 12, 2026

After the expansive joy and philosophical optimism of Sagittarius season, the Sun’s ingress into Capricorn on January 14th brings us back down to earth—quite literally. Capricorn is known as Makara in Sanskrit, and while Western astrology depicts it as a goat, the true symbol is far more mystical: a dragon-like creature with the face of a deer and the body of an amphibian, struggling to arise from the swamp of material existence to fly toward the heavens.

In my nearly four decades of practicing Vedic astrology, I have watched this annual journey into Capricorn challenge us all to face the fundamental question: can we free the spiritual from its material prison?

THE DRAGON IN THE SWAMP

Capricorn represents the fall of spiritual energy as it descends into matter and becomes entangled with material desires. It is the natural 10th sign of the zodiac, connected to our desire to rise in status, to be acknowledged in the world, to build infrastructure and achieve recognition. Yet this very drive toward worldly success can become our cage.

The spiritual essence of Capricorn is the emergence and struggle of this dragon creature from the lagoon, working to cast off the shackles of materialism. It symbolically represents the dragon of wisdom in esoteric astrology—the universal symbol of the pentagram, the five-pointed star of Divine intelligence.

What makes this sign so complex is that Capricorn is connected to the base chakra or Muladhara chakra, out of which the kundalini energy arises. Hence it contains the latent potential for full realization, but this potential remains grounded and hidden in the earth, needing to be awakened. If one discovers spirituality, then the coiled snake energy awakens and Capricorn can complete its journey.

PRACTICAL, CONSERVATIVE, CAUTIOUS

If your Vedic Sun, Moon, or rising sign is Capricorn, you likely embody a very practical individual with conservative values who spends more time preventing problems from happening rather than using creative energies. The responsibility of Saturn, which rules Capricorn, makes Capricorns great employees. The tenacious and persevering energy makes them ideal workers.

But there’s a shadow side to this practicality. Capricorns can become overly suspicious, selfish, have difficulty making friends, be late and tardy, become gloomy, and grow overly concerned with security. They can be so caught up in preventing problems that they forget to live. The “more stuff” mentality of accumulating material security can become a prison that blocks the very spiritual freedom this sign is meant to achieve.

Saturn rules Capricorn, and that is why it is one of the more difficult signs of the zodiac, connecting it to hard work, trials and suffering, and not an easy life. It requires toil and grief to become realized over a long time. Capricorns must find meditation and spiritual practice to move out of the grips and jail of the material world.

THE SUN’S COMPLEX DANCE

The Sun’s relationship with Capricorn is fascinating and paradoxical. While the Sun represents our Divine spark and must ultimately strive for that higher spiritual realm, Capricorn has difficulty with the Sun. The Sun is technically a neutral planet to Capricorn—not a friend, not an enemy—creating a complex dynamic.

When the Sun transits Capricorn, it can give us power and confidence to achieve in the material world. The Sun rules leadership, authority, and the ability to shine in our career and public recognition. For those born with Sun in Capricorn, this can manifest as powerful business acumen and the drive to build lasting structures.

However, as the 8th house ruler of Leo for Capricorn rising charts, the Sun can also cause abuse of power and vulnerability. The darker qualities emerge when material success becomes divorced from ethical behavior and spiritual awareness. We see this in figures like Bernie Madoff, a famous Capricorn rising, who thought nothing of funneling pension money into his private coffers. China, a Capricorn rising country, embodies both the infrastructure-building power of Capricorn and the ethical challenges of material ambition without moral restraint.

The key is balance. If the Sun is exalted in Aries in a Capricorn’s chart, they have a fully realized Divine heart and can move beyond power constraints. But when the Sun is fallen in Libra, it can create tyrannical energy at work and force Capricorns into their dark and controlling nature.

ENTHUSIASM TEMPERED BY DISCIPLINE

Capricorns are often filled with enthusiasm and energy and idealism, yet Saturn by its nature prevents them from expressing their talents without earning it through sustained effort. This creates an interesting paradox: the desire to rise and be acknowledged exists alongside the requirement for patience, discipline, and hard work.

This is not easy energy. Like a good high school coach who pushes you to do great things and go the distance to make it happen, Capricorn energy will support hard work, success, and achievement—but it will not let up and make it an easy picnic. The demands are constant, the standards high, the journey long.

BALANCING THE MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL

The remedy for Capricorn’s challenges always involves Venus—the planet of pleasure, relationships, and sensual experience. Venus is the best planet for Capricorn, owning the 5th and 10th houses, and its fun-loving nature balances out the hard-working, crusty side of Saturn. Women particularly balance out Capricorn men, and marriage, creativity at work, artistic expression, sexual expression, and massage are keys to balancing Saturn’s heaviness.

Mercury is the second-best remedy, reminding us that Capricorns need more comedy and humor to get through their suffering and hard work. Watching comedy on TV or participating in improv can help lighten the struggles.

Most importantly, this is a time to embrace discipline around meditation, yoga, and exercise. The natural remedies for Saturn become easier during Sun in Capricorn because there is more Saturnian discipline and hard work energy available. Join the gym, take a yoga class, or commit to daily meditation. The spiritual practices that feel like too much effort during other times of the year become more accessible now.

RELATIONSHIP VULNERABILITIES

With Cancer owning the 7th house, Capricorns are emotionally vulnerable in relationships and hurt easily. They tend to attract emotional partners at odds with their practical nature. This creates tension between the cool, rational, conservative Capricorn energy and the fluctuating, nurturing, sensitive energy of Cancer partners.

The Moon is a difficult planet for Capricorns, and during Sun in Capricorn, we all may feel this push-pull between emotional needs and practical responsibilities, between the heart’s wisdom and the mind’s calculations. Learning to honor both becomes essential.

THE DRAGON’S TRANSFORMATION

In summary, Capricorns—and all of us during this Sun transit—are powerful creators in the material realm but need to move beyond self-centeredness and discover spirituality in order to fly out of the swamp of suffering. We must remember to be ethical, balance our lives with fun and sensual experience, and strive to help heal humanity.

Then Capricorn can become the dragon and fully emerge into its full force of inspiration. The coiled snake energy at the base of the spine can rise through the chakras toward enlightenment. The creature of the lagoon can spread its wings and soar.

This month-long journey asks us all the same question: will we remain trapped in the material swamp, endlessly accumulating more stuff and preventing problems, or will we awaken the kundalini energy and discover the spiritual freedom that has been waiting at the base chakra all along?

The choice, as always, is ours.
